Surf fishing 101-

We are obsessed with surf fishing! One of the more economical outdoor activities you can do on your own or with the family. All you’ll need is a state fishing license (always check your States regulations before going out), a cheap rod and reel combo and your set. Even the bait is free and easy to come by! The West Coasts beaches are home to a variety of fish that are great sport and even better table fare. The staple target species for the surf would have to be the different species of Surfperch! Typically available all year round these feisty fish put up a fun fight.

A cheap rod with a light pound test and you’ll be good to go! Below will break down target species and what gear and techniques work best for each type of fish. Will get into bait, rigs, tides and time of year to ensure you have the best odds in your favor.

Structure-When Surf Fishing you want to keep an eye out for “Structure”. This doesn’t necessarily mean a structure you can visibly see in the water such as rocks or pilings. Structure means any area that a fish can use to ambush prey, take cover from the current or just be holding in a zone.

Many of these structures are troughs or trenches in the water that are formed from the waves and currents. These zones could hold schools of fish that can keep you catching for hours. This is why it is so important to fan cast (cast to your left, cast in front of you and cast to the right). Keep walking down the beach until you find structure that is holding fish. Finding structure gets easier with experience and time. Many elements come into play, tide, current, weather and time of year. The more familiar you are with your local beach the better of time you will have surf fishing. Also a good pair of Polarized glasses will pay dividends.
